Online Experiments

Romantic Relationships and Access to Alternative Partners
You are invited to participate in a short study approved by the Oakland University Institutional Review Board. The purpose of this research study is to understand behaviors that individuals perform within their romantic relationships. We are specifically interested in how access to alternative romantic partners affects these behaviors. You are being asked to participate in the study because you are at least 18 years old and have been in at least one romantic relationship. If you agree to take part in this research, you will be asked to complete a number of questionnaires. The study will last about 1 hour.

Sex Drive and Mate Preferences
The Department of Psychology at Oakland University is looking for heterosexual or homosexual men and women to participate in a research study exploring how sexuality influences judgments of what is attractive. This survey is entirely online and lasts 45-60 minutes. You will be asked to: (1) Answer demographic questions, including your age and ethnicity; (2) complete a series of surveys, some of which are sexual in nature and (3) rate male and female faces for attractiveness. Participants must be cisgender (i.e., identify with the biological sex they were assigned at birth) and 18 years or older. No identifying information is recorded.

Perceptions of Men's Faces
We are interested in how aspects of face shape affect men’s and women’s preferences and opinions of male faces. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire that includes questions about your age, sex, and ethnicity. You will also be asked to indicate your sexual orientation. This information is being collected purely for demographic purposes. Lastly, you will be asked to rate a series of faces on a variety of dimensions (for example, how dominant you think it is) on a 10 point scale. The order of these tasks will be completely random. You must be 18 years old or older to participate.

Hormones and Partner-Related Behavior
You are invited to participate in an online study. This study is for POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN (i.e., women who have not experienced menstrual bleeding in at least 12 months) aged 45-65 years who identify as heterosexual. The purpose of this research is to understand how hormone replacement therapy can influence female psychology. You will be asked to do the following: 1) provide demographic information about your age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, approximate household income, and relationship status; 2) provide information about your last menstrual cycle and use of hormonal replacement therapy (if applicable); and (3) complete several questionnaires, including questionnaires pertaining to personality traits, social values, and self-image. Participation is completely voluntary and will last approximately 45 minutes.

Perceived Social Roles and Face Preferences
This study is for those 18 years of age and older who identify as heterosexual or mostly heterosexual. You will be asked questions about your sexual preferences, orientation, and feelings. You will also be asked to rate yourself (and your partner, if applicable) on varied characteristics and will be asked to rate male and female faces for attractiveness. Participation is voluntary and takes about 15-20 minutes.

It's all in the Eyes
This study asks you to rate a series of faces multiple times on various emotions (e.g., anger, sadness, happiness, etc.). To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old. Participation takes 45-60 minutes.

Staying Friends (or Not) After a Breakup
Must be 18 years of age or older, identify as exclusively heterosexual, and have been in at least one romantic relationship previously (NOT including your current relationship). You are invited to participate in a one-session study. If you agree to take part in this research study, you will be given a list of reasons for why someone might stay or not stay friends with an ex and asked to indicate whether and how often each item has been a reason for staying or not staying friends your ex(s). You will also be asked to do the following: 1) provide demographic information about your age and ethnicity, 2) complete a few personality and relationship behavior questionnaires, and 3) asked to recall information about previous relationships. All procedures in this survey have been approved by the Oakland University Institutional Review Board. This study will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

Personality and Relationships
If you agree to take part in this research study, you will be asked to do the following: 1) provide demographic information about your age and ethnicity, 2) complete a series of personality and relationship behavior inventories, 3) provide information about your current romantic relationship (relationship duration, age of your partner, whether your relationship is exclusive/polyamorous or committed/not committed, and information about how your relationship started), and 4) asked to recall information about previous relationships. This study will last approximately 30-45 minutes.
